New York, NY | July 2, 2024 – The National Dominican Women's Caucus (NDWC) expresses its deep concern and dismay at the recent decision by the United States Supreme Court which grants considerable immunity to former President Donald Trump against criminal prosecution for acts carried out during his final days in office. This decision, issued last Monday with a majority vote of 6 to 3, sets a precedent that could significantly delay any trial against him, particularly in the case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

The ruling, read by Chief Justice John Roberts, states that former presidents enjoy "absolute procedural immunity" for their official acts, while unofficial acts are not covered by such immunity. However, the Court has delegated to the lower courts the task of distinguishing between official and unofficial conduct, which is likely to introduce additional delay before Trump can face trial.

"This resolution is not only a blow to the integrity of our democracy, but it also grants almost monarchical protection to an individual whose ability to lead has been widely questioned, both emotionally and mentally," said Zenaida Mendez, President of the NDWC. "We are deeply concerned that this decision establishes a dangerous precedent that could be used to justify inappropriate future behaviors by high-ranking political figures."

"This Supreme Court decision further reinforces a government agenda that deeply erodes the democratic principles of our nation, and highlights the imminent danger of a potential new term for Donald Trump as President," added Mendez.

The NDWC urges the community and political leaders to reflect on the implications of this decision and to unite in defending the democratic principles that underpin our society. "We will continue to be vigilant and active in our commitment to justice and equity, ensuring that all political actors, regardless of their position or power, are held accountable for their actions; no one, absolutely no one should be above the law," concluded Mendez.
