The National Dominican Women's Caucus (NDWC) will hold the "Latina Leaders Summit" in New York City, with the objective of addressing issues that concern them in order to take concrete actions for women's rights.

The event will open this Friday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m. and will run through Sunday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. at the Columbia Alumni Auditorium 650 West 168 Street, NYC. 10033.

The Summit will be held in celebration of "Women's History Month" in the United States.

NDWC Founder and President, Zenaida Mendez, indicated that the occasion is propitious for concrete actions to be taken around the central issues that involve and affect women, such as: physical and mental health, affordable housing, and education from elementary school through college.

This meeting will bring together Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Central American and South American leaders with the purpose of developing a work action plan to continue the advances in New York, a city to which many women have migrated in search of opportunities.

"We want those of us who are here and there to have spaces for convergence and knowledge, to reflect on the current situation of women's rights, as well as the setback we are experiencing in rights won in the U.S.," said Mendez.

The Dominican activist considers this setback as an affectation for women living in the U.S., which has repercussions in all latitudes as well as in the consequences for the new generations.

"Another reflection we will have is on the ravages of the pandemic, the economic crisis and a war that directly affects the economy of our countries. What is going to happen to women's rights in this context?" emphasized Mendez.

In this first installment, the "Latina Leaders Summit" will feature speakers from the United States, particularly from New York City, and special international guests.

Among the speakers and panelists are: Fenix Arias; administrator of the School System in Yonkers, New York; Oxiris Barbot, president of the United Health Fund Foundation; Nicole Pichardo, DR reproductive rights activist; Johanna Fernandez, teacher and writer; Yaritza Mendez, coordinator of the organization Make the Road New York; Carla Garcia, coordinator of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras.

Also present will be Jessica González Rojas, New York State Assemblywoman; Councilwoman Carmen de la Rosa, among other elected officials. As well as Kaliris Salas-Ramirez, representative of public school parent boards and other community activists.

During the activity, three women will be recognized for their outstanding contribution to the advancement of the communities in which they work in the United States.

For Zenaida Mendez, the importance of the presence of women leaders of all nationalities at this meeting is that it will help strengthen local and foreign relations between U.S. and Latina organizations, as well as the governments of the countries represented.

"The participation and contribution in this first meeting of Latina Leaders in New York will be of great impact for women in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean," said Mendez.
